Using the arts and creativity to spark dialogue and initiate change.
Founded in 2017 and voted “Best Art Speaker Series” by Charlotte Magazine in 2018, the Spheres Series brings local, national, and international leaders in the arts together for discussions on the value of cultural exchange—and to share experiences curating, collecting, and engaging with artists.
Watch “Responsibility of Representing” 06/16
Join renowned photographer, and 2020 Guggenheim Fellow, Linda Foard Roberts and Bank of America Executive Allen Blevins as they discuss Robert’s award, work, and new solo exhibition, "Responsibility of Representing", at the Mint Museum. Robert’s photographs are deeply personal, rooted in memory, family and local histories combined with philosophical inquiries about life, death, and basic human rights. Using 8" x 10" and 5" x 7" cameras and preferring the imperfections of antique lenses and the history untold within them, her photographs are metaphorical and layered, intending to cross cultural and language barriers.
Jen Sudul Edwards, Chief Curator and Curator of Contemporary Art at the Mint Museum, introduces and walks us through the exhibition.
Watch “Angels to Anathema: What To Do When Artists Behave Badly?” 02/26
Michael Jackson, Pablo Picasso, Bill Cosby—artists and public figures often find themselves under scrutiny for unsavory decisions they make in their private lives. And where does that leave the fans? In the midst of cancel culture and the #MeToo movement, reconciling (or separating) the artist and their art is a hotly contested topic. If you missed our Feb. 26 panel discussion, catch the whole conversation here.
Panelists included Charlotte-based interdisciplinary artist John W. Love Jr., a former Guggenheim fellow, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Emily Nussbaum, a television critic for The New Yorker and author of I Like to Watch: Arguing My Way Through the TV Revolution. The Mint Museum’s Chief Curator and Curator of Contemporary Art Jen Sudul-Edwards, PhD, moderated.
